I am a trained technical writer with industry experience in copyediting, editorial work, and design. I have 3 years experience working as a copyeditor for a news organization, 7 years of design work with various organizations and groups, and 10 years of writing center consultancy work with primarily Mexican American, ESL, and international undergraduate and graduate students. I have worked with clients on academic manuscripts, website designs, grant projects (with qualitative and quantitative data), and white papers—among numerous other projects. I have also worked with clients in developing workplans based on editorial feedback from academic journals. I’m confident working with MLA, APA, and AP style, as well as science writing and technical documents. Below are my current rates and anonymous testimonials from prior writing and editorial clients.
I am also a cofounder and former organizer with Queering Medicine, a Lansing-based grassroots coalition working to improve queer health in the area, by meeting with members of the queer and trans communities and leveraging university, industry, and governmental resources to prioritize community needs and affirm marginalized perspectives and voices. I have helped conduct LGBTQIA-affirming training for medical students and providers, partnered with the local county health department and other NGOs, facilitated focus groups, and have created a database of queer- and trans-friendly providers in the area. When I teach these subjects, in classes and workshops, I foreground structural, sustainable change, assembling theory and practice to improve the quality of life for those who need it most, and centering ethical community engagement practices.
As a guest in your class, I can speak to my research agenda and practices, and I am comfortable working with students to teach them digital method for gathering social media data, showing them the technical aspects of how social media platforms function, and the ways theoretical traditions allow us to speak truth to power in relation to health, medicine, and identity. Guest lectures might include, for example, lessons on how to build small-scale web scrappers to gather data from a website of a student's choosing, building a routine program using R to gather social media posts related to a specific topic, or running experiments to excavate the machinations of social media algorithms. My methodological practice animates from my research foci and disciplinary training, and as a qualitative researcher, I can lecture on frameworks grounded in Indigenous studies and digital studies, how to conduct case studies on social media as well as perform qualitative analysis.
